We have three fully qualified Eye Clinic Liaison Officers (ECLO’s), who cover the Eye clinics at Colchester and Clacton Hospitals and support the low vision clinic at Broomfield Hospital.
Our ECLO’s play a key role in helping with the practical and emotional support the patient and their families need to understand the understand the impact of their diagnosis and how to deal with their sight loss and maintain independence. Being diagnosed with an eye condition can be difficult to come to terms with and while everyone reacts differently, it can be an extremely confusing and uncertain time and in many cases emotionally traumatic.
Our ECLOs have the time to dedicate to patients following consultation, so that they can discuss the impact the condition may have on their life, providing the emotional and practical support that eye patients’ need. They work closely with medical and nursing staff in the eye clinic and the sensory team in social services. They will take self referrals and visit patients in their home to work out how best to help them live independently with an eye condition.
